Manchester City Council

The brief

The refurbishment of the offices at Heron House – a 123,000 sq ft, 6 floor landmark office and retail building in central Manchester – is the first example of the Council’s vision to create modern, comfortable, flexible workspaces to improve productivity within the organisation. The key elements of the brief were to:

  • Trial new ways of working, with hot desks and meeting spaces booked electronically;
  • Provide an alternative to traditional pedestals for storage of files, stationery and personal belongings.

A building contractor was appointed to refurbish the space.

The solution

Egan Reid’s design includes:

  • Cost-effective bench workstations with clean-line, uncluttered aesthetics, ideal for cable management requirements and easy to reconfigure;
  • A ‘hot box’ storage solution, designed to be portable, accommodate files, notebook PCs and stationery, hang from the desktop screens to free up valuable desk space or fit into a filing drawer
  • Side filer metal storage units providing individual storage for files alongside the ‘hot box’;
  • Lockers for storing personal items;
  • Desktop power modules for notebook users.

Vibrant colours have been chosen to create a modern, stylish, dynamic environment, with wall, flooring, upholstery and screen finishes carefully matched.
